Baikal Lake: A Timeless Natural Marvel Beyond 25 Million Years

Cicadas can be a risk for seafood allergy sufferers because the insects are related to crustaceans.

The consumption of insects and their derivatives has increased considerably, including in the USA.

In 2013, the UN suggested that we should eat insects as a possible solution to ending world hunger, as there are plenty of insects and they cost much less to raise than animals.

Insects are proportionally much richer in protein than animal meat. Insects contain between 30% and 80% protein, and some also contain important minerals and vitamins.

    Cicada Apocalypse

Two large broods of cicadas will surface from the ground simultaneously within the United States in the year 2024. The last time this event occurred was in 1803, and it is predicted that billions of insects will fly and sing for at least six weeks, the equivalent of their reproduction period. The phenomenon has been dubbed the “cicada apocalypse” on social media.

The cicadas that will emerge are classified by numbered broods (groups), such as Brood XIX or Brood XIII. Each brood has a specific emergence cycle, which is 13 and 17 years respectively. These cicadas are known for emerging in large numbers, flooding specific areas with their presence.

    Cicada Season

These cicadas typically surface in the United States either during late spring or early summer. The typical period for emergence is between May and July.

    Soil Temperature is a Warning

Cicadas dwell underground for the majority of their lives, nourishing themselves by feeding on tree roots. Soil temperature plays a crucial role in synchronizing emergence.

Cicadas wait for the soil up to 30 cm below the ground to reach a temperature of around 18º C before they emerge. This is an evolutionary adaptation to ensure that their adult phase coincides with ideal conditions for mating and laying eggs.

    FDA Warning

The Food and Drug Administration recommends that people with seafood allergies be cautious when consuming insects. In 2021, consumption of the delicacy increased in the country during the reproduction period of these insects, which are similar in size to shrimps and are related to crustaceans. Cicadas do not sting and are not toxic.

    Healthy Food

Gluten-free, they possess a high protein content and are restricted in fats and carbohydrates. Predators, including birds and small mammals, frequently consume them.

Cicadas Can Be a Risk for Seafood Allergy Sufferers

Insects and crustaceans are categorized under the phylum of arthropods. According to a report from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), there is a need for further investigation regarding the potential allergenic risks linked to the consumption of edible insects. The report highlights that individuals with crustacean allergies may experience allergic reactions to edible insects, as they contain similar proteins.

Not the First, Not the Last

The “cicada apocalypse” has a cycle of 221 years, because there are two large broods of cicadas in the USA, one group has a cycle of 13 years and the other 17 years.

This is the time they stay underground until they become adults, and when they come out, they stay alive for an average of six weeks, which is the time they use to reproduce.

So, every 221 years, they coincidentally emerge from the earth in the same year.

The “cicada apocalypse” is a rare phenomenon, which perhaps not everyone wants to witness, but the next time is scheduled for the year 2245. It is estimated that at least 17 states will be affected by the phenomenon.

The population will be faced with a lot of noise and unwanted visitors.
